Overview: Rouge Watershed and Restoration Efforts

The Rouge River watershed, a designated "Area of Concern" in the Great Lakes region, has been the focus of extensive environmental restoration efforts for over a decade. Since 2010, the Alliance of Rouge Communities has invested more than $30 million into habitat restoration projects. Recent highlights include ongoing work at Colonial Park and a visionary new project planned for Inkster Park.

Planned Habitat Restoration & Public Access at Inkster Park

The planned transformation of Inkster Park is designed to benefit both nature and the community. Proposed restoration activities include:

  • Removal of invasive plant species

  • Creation of wetlands and native prairies

  • Construction of trails and boardwalks

  • Addition of a public kayak launch

  • Improved connections to nearby neighborhoods and communities

While funding for the design phase is secured, construction funding is still being pursued.

Connecting the Lower Rouge Greenway Trail System

One of the project’s exciting goals is to extend the Lower Rouge Greenway, linking Inkster Park to other regional parks and neighborhoods. Once complete, the connected trail system will provide a continuous, pedestrian- and bike-friendly corridor for both recreation and alternative transportation throughout the area.

Blending Habitat Restoration with Recreation & Engagement

Beyond ecological restoration, the speaker emphasized a broader vision: making the park a vibrant, accessible space for the public. Proposed amenities include:

  • Scenic trails and river overlooks

  • Picnic areas and seating spaces

  • Interactive educational elements

These features aim to encourage community interaction with nature, instilling a shared sense of stewardship and pride in the park’s care.

Inkster Breaks Ground on New Affordable Housing, Bringing Hope and Excitement to Residents

Posted to Office of the Mayor by Troy Johnson - Seaton

For the first time since the 2008 housing crash, the City of Inkster is celebrating a major milestone — the groundbreaking of a new affordable housing development that promises to bring both opportunity and stability to local families.

On Friday, dozens gathered to witness what many say is a long-awaited and much-needed moment for the city. The event marked the beginning of construction on Annapolis Pointe, a $21 million investment that will deliver 72 new homes over the next four years. The project will offer a mix of luxury, affordable, and market-rate housing aimed at supporting Inkster’s working families — including educators, first responders, and healthcare professionals.

"This project means the world to me," said Sherri Clarke, a hopeful applicant and financial advisor. "Being a single mother and facing rising costs, I just want to create a stable home for my children and my grandson, who is hearing impaired."

Led by Gajewski Homes and CEO ShaWanna Gajewski, the development is more than just housing — it's a path to homeownership and long-term generational wealth.

“I’m looking forward to becoming a homeowner,” Clarke shared. “I’ve been renting, but I’m ready for the process.”

As construction begins, so does a new chapter for Inkster — one filled with renewed optimism, investment, and community pride.
