Garbage Collection

Rubbish containers should be put out on the easement, not in the street, and must be put out after 6pm the night before collection or by 6am on rubbish day. Prepare all materials properly for speedy, efficient pick-up. Rubbish/yard waste containers must be removed from the curb by midnight at the end of your rubbish day and stored in your garage or behind the house. Containers may not be stored on porches, side yards, or in view from the street.

Acceptable Rubbish Containers

A container purchased from Republic Waste Services INC. is the only acceptable container. Please call 877-264-5544 if you are in need of a container and there is a fee with ordering a container.

Regular Rubbish Pickup: (Bag or bundle all trash, no loose items)

  • Construction Material - must be bagged or bundled and 50 pounds or less
  • Household Furniture (except move outs). Large move outs will require a special pickup
  • Household Appliances - doors off refrigerators and freezers
  • Carpet/Padding - must be tied in 4-foot rolls and no more than 50 pounds each
  • Sinks/Laundry Tubs/Toilets
  • Firewood - must be bundled and tied in 4-foot lengths no more than 50 pounds
  • Animal Droppings - must be placed in doubled plastic bags and set out with trash
  • Latex paint, if completely dried out, may be placed at the curb for collection on your regular trash day. Remember to remove the lid and put the lid in your trash container. To dry out latex paint, open the can in a well ventilated area until it solidifies. Kitty litter can be used to absorb the latex paint. When the paint is completely hardened, remove the lid and put it in your trash container. Place the open paint can at the curb for collection.

Yard Waste / Brush

Yard waste/leaf collection will run from April through the month of November. Yard waste is picked up and should be set about three feet away from your regular rubbish and recycling bin. Yard waste is grass clippings, weeds, leaves, shrub and brush trimmings (remove dirt from roots). Do not mix fruit, vegetables, or animal waste with your yard waste. Plastic bags are not allowed for yard waste. Yard waste may be placed loose in your own 20 - 32-gallon containers with a "Yard Waste Sticker" on the lid.
  • Leaves and Grass - In-yard waste paper bags or 32 gallon cans with stickers (up to 50 pounds)
  • Brush - Less than 3 inches in diameter, 4 feet long, tied with heavy cord or rope, no more than 50 pounds, and in bundles
  • Shrubs - Less than 50 pounds Remove root balls and bundle same as brush
  • Compost - Weight limits not more than 50 pounds

A resident hiring a private contractor for tree trimming/removal must require that contractor remove any brush, logs, or stumps.

Trees, Wood, Shrubs & Brush

  • Bend nails over, cut and securely tie into bundles not to exceed 3 inches in diameter

  • Same day as trash only the beginning of April to the end of May and the whole month of November, but from June to October during the Bi Weekly schedule refer to your Inkster Calendar for route A or B.

Curbside collection of yard waste begins April 2, 2007 through November 30, 2007. The purpose of this program is to protect the environment and reduce the amount of trash sent to landfills. Residents are required to separate grass clippings, leaves, weeds, and other “soft” yard waste from regular trash. Place marked can/compost bags at curbside for pick-up on the same day as trash. Don’t place in improper containers such a boxes/plastic bags or mix with rubbish. Separate yard waste bags from regular trash by 10 feet.


Recycling is scheduled for the first Saturday of each month (except for holidays). The City of Inkster supplies a drop-off site at the parking lot at Kurtsell and Huck Court located, 1 block north of Michigan Avenue and 1 block west of Inkster Road for the following recyclables:
  • Newspapers: Tied or placed in a brown paper bag.
  • Plastic Containers: Marked No. 1 or No. 2 (inside the triangular recycling symbol), rinsed clean with caps removed, and flattened when possible.
  • Glass: Clear, brown, and green, rinsed and unbroken.
  • Tin, Steel, and aluminum: Clean cans completely.
  • Paint: Paint must be dried out and in solid form with lids off.
  • No aluminum foil products, oil or glossy magazines.

Unacceptable Items

The trash contractors does not pick up any hazardous substances including the following Items:
  • Acid
  • Automobile parts
  • Building debris
  • Demolished structures
  • Explosive materials
  • Fertilizers
  • Gasoline
  • Hot ashes
  • Inflammable
  • Logs
  • Masonry dirt
  • Paints
  • Pesticides
  • Stump
  • Thinners
  • Tires
  • Waste oil
  • Weed killers

Vacant Lots

Vacant lots are the responsibility of the owner. If vacant lots are not maintained, the owner may receive a citation and the lot will be cut/cleaned at the owner’s expense. Complaints should be directed to Code Enforcement at 313-563-2820, or Department of Public Service at 313-563-9774.

Special Pick-Up

Heavy household items (Stoves, refrigerators, freezers, furniture and other heavy items) will be picked up on your regular pick-up day. Please call 877-264-5544 at least 24 hours ahead so that the proper moving equipment will be available.


Rubbish collection is delayed one day for Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving. The schedule is clearly marked on the calendar.

For example: Memorial Day and Labor Day is on Monday, therefore if your rubbish collection day is on Monday, your pickup day will be on Tuesday. Fourth of July is on Tuesday, therefore if your rubbish collection day is Tuesday, your pickup day will be on Wednesday. Thanksgiving Day is on Thursday, therefore if your pickup day is on Thursday, your pickup day will be on Friday, etc.
