After more than twenty-years, the City of Inkster is set to receive an increase in state revenue sharing, thanks to a change in the Michigan state budget. This means a boost in funding for essential city services that residents rely on every day.
Revenue sharing plays a vital role in supporting the basic functions of local governments across Michigan. It helps keep communities safe, roads maintained, and essential services running smoothly such as police and fire.
In the past, a change in the way the state distributed funds meant that nearly 1,200 communities, including the city of Inkster, lost out on revenue sharing. But this year's state budget includes a $60.2 million increase that will be distributed using the three-factor formula from 1998. This change ensures that every city, village, and township in Michigan receives a portion of the funds.
Beginning this year, the city will receive approximately $1.65 million more each year in revenue sharing.
Mayor Nolen expressed excitement about the news, saying, “This is a significant win for our community. Restoring the three-point system isn’t just about funding – it’s about helping to ensure Inkster’s families have access to the vital to services they deserve. I’ve been an advocate for this change for a while now. I’m proud that our legislature stepped up to support Inkster, and all the other Michigan communities who need this funding to make a difference in the resources they provide to their residents.”
The new funding will be distributed according to a formula that considers factors like population, property values, and the types of services each community provides. This ensures a fair and equitable distribution of funds across the state.
Residents of Inkster can expect to see the positive impact of this funding in the coming months and years as the city invests in improving and expanding its services.
