The Code Enforcement Officer works under the supervision of the Code Enforcement Supervisor and is responsible for inspection work, enforcing codes, ordinances, and related regulatory requirements for the general public and business entities within the City of Inkster. The Code Enforcement Officer reviews complaints and assists supervision in developing recommendations to resolve any complaints concerning ordinance violations. The position provides support and/or assistance to the general public and property owners as necessary.

The Code Enforcement Officer shall be trained and qualified with a firearm and qualify for a concealed pistol permit in the State of Michigan. The ordinance supervisor shall also be trained in other self-protection methods, including the ASP baton and Pepper Spray, and shall carry those items when on duty at all times. The Code Enforcement Officer shall be required to wear a bullet-resistant vest and uniforms as directed by the Chief of Police.

Essential Duties:

Conducts field inspections and issues written and/or verbal legal notices of code and regulation violations and issue written citations upon observed violations.
Maintains appropriate records and files.
Interacts with City Attorney in preparation of ordinance enforcement cases.
Interacts with other City, County, and State agencies to enforce violations.
Interacts with the general public in the enforcement of City Codes and Ordinances.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with city officials and employees, the general public, and representatives of other agencies toward the accomplishment of assigned projects.
Work effectively with a variety of staff, other governmental representatives, including the Mayor and staff, and the public; deal tactfully and courteously with the public and maintain composure in difficult and/or stressful situations.
Conducts systematic site inspections of properties and structures within the City to ensure compliance with all applicable City, State, and Federal codes and regulatory requirements; enforces all aspects of the City’s codes and ordinances including parking offenses.
Investigates code or ordinance non-compliant conditions on private property, public property, and business establishments.
Reviews case documentation and incident reports.
Presents evidence in various legal proceedings.
Performs related work as required including assisting police personnel with police-related functions, crowd control at scenes, and handling prisoners when necessary, and any other duties as directed by the Chief of Police or their designee.
