Law Enforcement Accreditation

The Inkster Police Department is in the process of acquiring our nation’s best accreditation for Law Enforcement certification from the Commission of Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (C.A.L.E.A.). The practices and policies recommended by CALEA are considered national best standards for police agencies. The CALEA board consists of top level police executives from across the nation. There are currently only 11 police agencies in the State of Michigan that are currently accredited with the CALEA award.

Since the first CALEA Accreditation Award was granted in 1984, the program has become the primary method for an agency to voluntarily demonstrate their commitment to excellence in law enforcement. The standards upon which the Law Enforcement Accreditation Program is based reflect the current thinking and experience of law enforcement practitioners and researchers. Major law enforcement associations, leading educational and training institutions, governmental agencies, as well as law enforcement executives internationally, acknowledge CALEA’s Standards for Law Enforcement Agencies© and its Accreditation Program as benchmarks for today’s law enforcement agency. *Michigan's Safety Belt and Child Restraint Laws*
Effective July 1, 2008	Restraint	Section
0 - 3 years	All passengers shall be properly secured in approved Child Restraint System	257.710d Driver responsible
4 through 7 and under 4'9" in height	All passengers shall be properly secured in approved Child Restraint System	257.710e Driver responsible
4 through 7 and 4'9" or greater in height or 8 - 15	All passengers shall wear a properly adjusted and fastened safety belt	257.710e Driver responsible
16 years and older	Driver and front seat passengers shall wear a properly adjusted and fastened safety belt
Child Restraint Exemptions (less than 4 years)
710d	Passenger in a bus, school bus, taxicab, moped, motorcycle, or other motor vehicle not required to be equipped with safety belts Child being nursed Child qualifying for a Secretary of State rule exemption due to size, medical problem, or physical unfitness
