Housing Unit
The Inkster housing unit consists of two police officers assigned to work in conjunction with Inkster housing officials to address their daily problems and concerns. The officer’s primary function is patrolling the Inkster housing area, to deter crime and protect the housing residents. The housing officers play an intricate part by interviewing and screening all new residents prior to acceptance and placement. They also assist with all Inkster housing community events.
Canine (K-9) Unit
The K-9 Unit consists of two dogs and their handlers: Officer James Beebe (K 9-Yeager) and Officer Dan Schewe (K9-Xander). The dogs and their handlers are trained in drug detection, tracking and building searches. Both dogs are trained and certified through the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA). The K-9 teams are assigned to Road Patrol duties allowing for a quick response to incidents where the use of the K-9 would be beneficial. The K-9 teams also assist on all drug-related search warrant executions, perform drug sweeps of local schools, and make public relation appearances throughout the city.
Special Response Team
The Special Response Team (SRT) is a designated unit of sworn police officers from the City of Inkster Police Department which is specifically trained and equipped to work as a coordinated unit to respond to critical incidents including hostage situations, barricaded suspects, snipers, terrorist acts and other high-risk incidents. As a matter of department policy, the SRT may also be deployed to serve high-risk warrants, both arrest and search, where public or officer safety issues compel the use of such a unit. The primary purpose of the Inkster Special Response Team is to save lives.
Members of the SRT are highly-trained professionals. After undergoing extensive initial training in basic SWAT operations, the SRT constantly trains throughout the year. The SRT members spend hundreds of hours training each year in a wide variety of weapons and tactics and also lead the training of road patrol personnel in responding to critical incidents and active shooter situations.
Federal and State Task Force Officers
The Inkster Police Department currently has 3 of its officers assigned to full-time work with various state and federal task forces. A federal task force is a group of officers from federal, state, and local agencies who combine resources under federal authority to address specific criminal activity. Officers of the Inkster Police Department assigned to federal task forces go through an extensive background check and receives special clearances providing them with access to highly sensitive information.
The Inkster Police Department has an officer assigned to the Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms (ATF) and one officer assigned to Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) task forces. An officer is also assigned to the Western Wayne County Michigan State Police Narcotic taskforce team. The assignment of these officers ensures that the Inkster Police Department is at the forefront in the fight against terrorism and major drug trafficking.
Traffic Bureau/Motor Unit
The Inkster Police Department Traffic Bureau is responsible for overseeing all traffic safety services and investigations within the City of Inkster. The Traffic Bureau consists of two police officers whose primary functions include investigating traffic-related complaints, processing all traffic-related arrests, impounding abandoned vehicles, enforcing city ordinances related to motor vehicles, investigating serious injury traffic accidents. The Traffic Bureau also is in charge of the department's Traffic Enforcement (T/E) program. The Motor Unit consists of a lieutenant, sergeant and seven patrol officers providing traffic control for parades and large funerals, and overseeing traffic-related grant programs.
Homicide
The Inkster Police Department is tasked with the investigation of all Homicides, Officer involved shootings, fire deaths, and suspicious deaths. The section is comprised of a Lieutenant, Sergeant and a Detective and several Evidence Technicians. The Inkster P.D. Homicide Section is committed to the unrelenting pursuit of those offenders who have committed murder and the successful prosecution of those involved. It is our hope that through our professionalism that the citizens of Inkster feel comfortable in contacting us with information related to any homicide that has occurred city wide.
