The Drug
Abuse Resistance Education Program was established in Los Angeles county
in 1983 due to a high surge in drug and gang activity among juveniles.
The program is currently taught all over the world in 53 countries. It
is also taught in 75% of all school districts. Many communities have
abandoned DARE but the City Of Inkster will hold onto their program.
The program allows the Police Officer to branch out to build rapport
with schools, parents and communities, allows students to share personal
stories never using names.

DUI Awareness
Annually the DARE program hosts a DUE Awareness program educating
High School Seniors about the danger of drinking and driving during the
week of their senior prom. The Graduates view a graphic real life
documentary depicting fatal consequences of drinking and driving. Then
the students hit the pavement (parking lot) in golf carts with "Beer
Goggles" on while experiencing intoxication driving a motorized
vehicle. It is fun, yet mind altering and challenging. Many of the
students enjoy the activity yet some are convinced that drinking and
driving can be a dangerous experience as they run over orange cones
outlines in a driving course outside of their school.
DARE Provides the following life skills:
- Providing accurate info about drugs, alcohol and tobacco
- Teaching students how to make good decision making skills
- Showing students how to recognize peer pressure
- Giving students ideas for positive alternatives to drug use.
- Building Self Esteem in the students
